How to Set Up a Playroom for Toddlers

Kids in the 2 and 3-year-old age group are exploring so many things. It's great to create a playroom that will help them enjoy playing and enjoy learning new skills. That being said, a playroom also has to be practical for parents! It's no fun to have a playroom that's hard to keep tidy or that doesn't work for other people who share the space. Here are a few tips for setting up a playroom for toddlers.

Find Storage That Works

Good storage can be such a lifesaver! It's one of the best ways to help your toddler's playroom stay tidy. Look for a couple of different types of storage.

First of all, look for bins that can go on the floor. These are bins that your toddler can get to by themselves, and they should contain toys that can be played with all the time and are pretty easy to pick up. By putting the bins at floor level, you can encourage your toddler to pick up after they are done playing.

Paula, from Beauty Through Imperfection, also encourages thinking about safety with these storage bins. If a toddler could stand on it to get to something they shouldn't, or if it might collapse if they stand/climb on it, then choose a different bin!

Second, utilize some storage that your toddler can't access. Things like puzzles with lots of pieces, large sets of blocks, and art supplies (i.e. toys that are messy or require supervision) should be stored out of reach. This will also help keep your playroom clean!

Toddler Playroom Must Haves

In addition to great storage, there are some other things that can make your toddler playroom a geat space.

  • Plenty of floor space with comfy carpets or mats
  • Space for your kids to read and store their books
  • A space for kids to be creative
  • A space for kids to play pretend or dress up
Toys are also a must-have, but it's definitely better to have a smaller number of toys that your kids play with regularly and really love. There's no need to have a whole bunch of toys. It's about quality over quantity.

If you're looking for some toddler toy ideas, consider one of these: a rocking horse, a mini basketball hoop, a mini slide, a teepee or playhouse, blocks, puppets and a puppet theatre, sensory table (these come in lots of options like water, sand, building blocks, or trains), or a roadway play mat. Check out some of these DIY ideas below!
