Although we love our plain terra cotta pots, it's time to change up your garden with new planters. So, try this Cinder Block Planter Wall DIY to make your outdoor garden a little more interesting! Made entirely out of cinder blocks, this planter wall DIY is a gardening project that you'd never expect. Stacked on top of each other, the cinder blocks create a wall, and they double as planters. You can plant your flowers and your vegetables in the cinder blocks to create a garden in a unique way.

Materials List

  • 45 cement blocks
  • Potting soil
  • Plants and flowers
  • Fiskars Big Grip Trowel (400S)

Instructions:

  1. Start by stacking the cement blocks on the ground. You can offset the second level so that the seams don’t line up. As you stack the blocks, remember to jut a few blocks out because they will be planted once the wall is done. The wall is stacked to about three feet high with multiple spots to plant.

  2. Cut and fold some wire mesh to create little baskets for the open areas in the cement blocks. These baskets will help hold the soil in the cement blocks that are jutting out.

  3. Fill your spaces with potting soil using the Big Grip Trowel. This hand tool has an extra-large scoop to help you fill your blocks quickly. Plus the soft-grip handle provides extra comfort.

  4. Add your fillers, thrillers, and spillers.  Don’t forget to water right away to set your plants!

NotesTips to keep in mind:

• The right potting soil is important. Plants that are planted above ground will dry out quicker and potting soil is specially made to retain moisture.
• Consider the light conditions of the location of the vertical garden and purchase plants that will grow best in your space.
• When selecting your plants, keep this landscaper planting tip in mind: use a filler, a thriller, and a spiller. The filler plants are green and add lushness to the vertical garden. The thriller adds eye-popping color. And the spiller adds dimension to the area.

So cool!

This is such a clever idea! The mixture of hard and soft is so modern and trendy. The best part is you can update the wall with new plants year after year. Love it!
