This is a cool idea but because the fruit would be worthless after using the cloves I would consider this a waste of fruit. However, on the other hand to get the same effect how about using some sort of artificial fruit instead to get the same result.

I have seen this done with oranges during the Winter months. As a matter of fact as a child in Elementary school many, many years ago, an art teacher completed this project with us using oranges. I thought is was really fun. My Mother was so impressed.

This idea gives inspiration for another option...use wax or plastic fruit, paint them a bit to make them look more realistic if necessary, and you can still add the cloves either with a hole, punch or some white glue that dries clear, or both. The cloves last a long time, and will still impart the fragrance without the worry of fruit flies as the real, pears go bad. But for a temporary look, the real fruit is a lovely idea!

What a darling idea! I think that we've all seen the old fashioned version of this with the cloves stuck in an orange, but this is a really refreshing take. I bet the smell would be phenomenal. My only concern is how long it would last. I'm thinking that it would only last a day or so because the pears are so delicate and would start to brown as soon as the skin was punctured. Nonetheless, it would be a wonderful to welcome guests on Thanksgiving! Super cute.

How cute! You could use these as place settings too, by decorating each with the initial of a guest.
