From the blogger: "We had so much fun making this little desert fairy garden, I wanted to share “how we did it” with you. A humble little wooden tissue holder forms the basis of the house and everything else can be found in the garden or in your craft cupboard."

Materials List

  • Wooden tissue box
  • Bits of bark
  • Pewter
  • Glue
  • Succulents
  • Things you have in your craft cupboard

DIY Project Instructions

  1. We built a roof for the tissue box out of hardboard and cut two windows and a door using our Dremel. We stripped the bark off of some logs we had lying around and used silicone glue to clad the outside of the tissue box. We cut thin strips of wood into small shingles which we sealed with a matte outdoor wood sealer and then covered the roof and finally we finished the top of the roof off with a piece of pewter.

  2. We even added solar power. Our little desert fairy is determined to live off the grid. Hubby dismantled a solar garden light for me and we built the solar panel into the roof. I love watching the light go on every night. I’m a mother hen when it comes to the fairies, I need to know they’re home safe.

  3. Unfortunately the house is a little bit small for an en suite bathroom so when nature calls our desert fairy has to use an outhouse. We scored pewter to mimic corrugated iron and stuck it on with silicon glue.

  4. We planted succulents and cacti in a half a wine barrel and added some coarse sand and the fairy garden was ready for the desert fairy to move in.

This is such a sweet project! I can imagine these spread out all over my garden, near the flowers. There could different themes. This way the fairies feel like they are on a different vacation with each house. ) Seriously though, I love this and the detailed instructions. I also love the solar light idea. I think I am going to put this on my to-do list for this coming summer!

What a neat idea for a girl's party idea. You could have all of the young ones make a garden to take home with them. It would be like all of the party guests having a birthday themselves because they got to make such a neat gift! Thanks for sharing with all of us!
