You can create a DIY self-watering planter for your indoor or outdoor plants for when you are away. If you are looking for ideas on how to water plants when on vacation, this is a great solution. It uses a doctored wine bottle that is set upside-down in the planter. The bottle slowly releases water into the soil, keeping your plant thriving until it is empty. This project is also one of the best wine bottle crafts to help you recycle used bottles. You can use plastic bottles to create this watering system, too.

I am pretty sure any type of bottle with a narrow area at the opening would work. You could put the bottle or water source above in a hidden area and attach a simple hose, like the clear coffee maker tube they'd sell at the hardware store, and run it to the plant. Another option are those gels that hold the moisture and lessen the need to water so often! Great tip, thanks for sharing!

I love this idea, but the only thing I am concerned with is that everyone will know that you are not home. Otherwise, I feel that this is an amazing way to recycle like Weberme says, and you can take care of your plants with no worry if you decide to stay on vacation a bit longer and want to leave the plants go for a bit more than you expected.

Great tutorial and does not cost anything and a great way to recycle. I do not drink wine but do drink lots of water and my husband drinks a lot of soda. Will the 2 liter bottles work? I do not need these just for vacations but need to keep my plants hydrated all day now because it is so hot that as soon as I water them they dry out so I will be trying this as soon as I get some bottles emptied . Thanks for the tip.

Perfect! I'm always worried I'll come home to dead plants. Nobody wants that!

Such a smart idea! Watering plants is always a concern during vacations; so, this tutorial is a great way to take those worries away and make vacation even more relaxing!
