Learn how to properly match furniture styles and more with Home Decor Cheat Sheets, a fabulous guide to DIY interior design. Author Jessica Probus and Illustrator Alice Mongkongllite have designed an accessible text on the dos and don'ts of decorating. Match your coffee table style to your couch, your curtains to your windows, and more with this handy book from Ulysses Press.

This book is divided into several sections based on rooms and "real estate" if you will. Begin with the living room and learn about different sofa styles, armchairs, coffee tables, and end tables. I learned fascinating information about the coffee table-to-couch ratio: "For optimal balance and function, the coffee table should be around two thirds the width of the sofa, and the height should be 2 to 4 inches below the height of the sofa seat. To give ample room for moving around, make sure there are around 18 inches of space between the sofa and the table" (p. 21). The dining room covers tables, chairs, and stools, and the bedroom covers beds and pillows. In the decorative pillows section, you can learn all about how to arrange a variety of decorative pillows on twin, full & queen, and king sizes.

Moving past rooms, we enter chapters on tile & rugs; windows & doors; art & walls; light; hardware & cabinetry; and design & decor tricks. Do you know what the ideal rug size is for your dining room? Bedroom? Living room? And did you know there is an ideal strategy for painting your door? Learn what type of paint is ideal for what type of room. Some paint finishes clean better than others, while some show imperfections easily and do not clean well. Speaking of materials you use to cover your walls, the sections on framing are fascinating. Gallery Walls 101 gives great insight into how you can hang a variety of frames for a gorgeous, eclectic yet cohesive look. This book also includes several gallery wall layouts for awesome ideas.

The last section I'll talk about is design & decor tricks. After looking at the individual rooms and the elements within, step back to the full scope of your home. Create a floor plan, identify the "flow" of the home, and learn how to mark the focal point of each room. This section perfectly encompasses all of the other sections for creating a stylishly decorated home.

I've barely scratched the surface when it comes to all of the fabulous tips for DIY home decor found in this book. Before you begin your next DIY project, equip yourself with this excellent style guide.
