Do you remember the days of string art? Nearly every home in the 1970s had this retro project hanging in living rooms and bedrooms. Exciting news: the popularity of string art is making a comeback! Dive into DIY String Art, a handy project book featuring 24 string art designs and thorough instructions for completing a variety of beautiful projects.

String art is such a cathartic craft. Between nailing the boards and securing the string, you can blow off steam and also relax as you wrap the string around and around the nails. Each step requires some level of precision, but happy mistakes contribute to the rustic feel of a string art project. Of course, the most rewarding feeling is the aesthetic created from a finished board. Making images from string is a unique and charming accomplishment. Guests will admire the finished product hanging on your walls, and you'll have the satisfaction of making a beautiful, decorative piece.

The book opens with basic techniques for string art. Read over the necessary materials and tools, basics for prepping, nailing, and stringing a board, and find troubleshooting tips as well as creative considerations in this introduction as well.

When perusing the projects, I was surprised by how complicated some of them turn out to be. String art looks so easy when the designs are filled in, but the nail patterns can actually be quite complicated! Fortunately, each pattern in this book has a difficulty level, so you can choose whatever projects you feel comfortable tackling. Some projects that look complicated are actually quite relaxing, and vice versa. For example, the Chrysanthemum (p.94) looks like an easy, bold-lined pattern when you behold the finished product, but the amount of nails you need can certainly look intimidating before you start stringing! That said, the Retro Spirograph (p. 98) looks extremely complicated, but once you understand the basic pattern and method, the project comes together smoothly.

String art is a great project to do together with kids. Adults should handle the cutting, sanding, and nailing of the boards of course, but choosing a design and wrapping the string together is such a lovely activity for children and parents alike. Create bedroom artwork together with your kids for a really fun way to dress up the space. For an exciting new craft that is practical and fun to make, consider DIY String Art.

I have run into some nice string art pieces and always wondered how this was done. now this might seem hard at first but you actually need to get the nails in place first. i would like to make an owl piece i hope i can get some help from this book .

I remember doing string art in the 70's to hang on my bedroom wall and the good feeling you get when you master the art and finish it. I got mine in a kit and I think it was for Christmas. I can not believe string art is making a comeback. I know some can be complicated and confusing because after awhile your nails seem to be the same but some mistakes add to it. I have not seen the new ones yet but I bet they offer so much more. I am going to pick one up and let my grand kids see how it is done. Are they more advanced then the 70's?

I have always wanted to try string art, it always looks so beautiful
