Materials List

  • Felted wool – about 2 yards per blanket
  • Yarn and needle
  • Sewing machine and thread
  • Pom pom trim
  • The Original Orange-handled Scissors™ (8")
  • Micro-Tip® Scissors (No. 5)

Cozy Outdoor Blankets

Fringed Wool Blanket

  1. Use the Orange Handled Scissors to cut your felted wool to 2 yards in length.

  2. Fold the fabric in half so that you have the two short ends of the wool on your work surface. Cut a zig zag edge through the layers with the Orange Handled Scissors.

  3. Use the MicroTip® Scissors to cut 2” into the edge, creating a fringed finish.

Blanket Stitched Edge Blanket

  1. Use the Orange Handled Scissors to cut your felted wool to 2 yards in length. Create a blanket stitched edge by cutting a length of yarn using the Micro-Tip® scissors then stitch around the entire edge of the wool. Knot the embroidery floss, thread the needle and insert the needle through the wool from the back to the front.

  2. Pull the entire length of floss through the wool, allowing the knot to stop you. Push the needle through the back to the front, in the same spot as the first time you inserted the needle. Pull the thread and as you do so, pass the needle through the loop. Pull tight and repeat around the entire edge of the blanket.

Pom-Pom Trimmed Blanket

  1. Cut your felted wool to 2 yards in length with your Orange Handled Scissors.

  2. Cut the trim to length and pin to the sides of the wool then hand or machine stitch in place.

What a great way to make a blanket that not only is useable but also pretty to look at and so easy to make. These outdoor blankets can be used for sporting events or even picnics or for camping. You can even use old blankets and add the pom pom or fringe or even edge stitch with a bold color. A very easy and fast project for a beginner sewer.

I'm constantly repurposing old blankets by adding neat trim or wanting to add trim or fringed edges to my crocheted yarn blankets. I like the idea to this project with the three different edging ideas, although I've always like the fringe and blanket-stitch technique looks a lot better then the pom pom one. I like to crochet blankets myself, but I will have to try this using all three edgings with some old blankets or fabric and see which I really like best!

I went to some outdoor Christmas/cocktail parties and there was an abundance of store bought fleece blankets (it was an exceptionally cold winter in Southern California). None were as attractive as these modified blankets..time to get to work for next year!!! Even if it's not thast cold, it's good to be prepared.
