From the blogger: "I received a set of map coasters from a good friend of mine when I was moving. She gave me one with the town we lived in, and another with the town we were moving to. It was not only a beautiful handmade gift, they tell such a great story, too! I've given these as hostess gifts, housewarming gifts, birthday and Christmas presents, and they are always well received! These custom coasters are very quick and easy to make. AND, they will cost you less than $2 per coaster to create!"

These map coasters are really creative and a great way to upcycle maps that may not be up to date! A great gift for someone who loves to travel or for a person who has been on vacation, to make it from brochures where they have been. This would also make a nice housewarming gift or for a bridal shower for a wedding! Or even as a momento for a school class trip or scout troop outing. Thanks for a great and practical idea!

I love crafts like this one. I've collected old calendars of cool prints to make envelopes out of, and now just might use those in place of maps, to make very personalized coaster sets for friends and family, especially for the holiday season for my kids, as they would love these! I agree about the acrylic sealant idea, that's an awesome alternative to basically laminate the images onto the tiles! I can't wait to start making them, and even sets with maps of hawaii for myself!

What a great idea! My son just returned from Italy with a lot of maps and I think this would be a great gift. You can always use coasters. I agree about the acrylic sealer. Much better than the alternative. Thank you for the idea.

I was looking for creative housewarming gifts and tripped across this tutorial. I think that it would be really cute to find a local map with the location of the new homeowner's house and create a set for them. It would be really cheap because you can usually get maps like that for free from your local tourist information centre. I'm wondering where the most affordable place to buy tiles would be? I've never bought them before. I guess I'll have to go hunting at my local hardware store!

I'm lowkey obsessed with maps so I love this project!

These are such a great going away gift! They are so thoughtful. These would also be fun to make for your own home with the maps of your favorite places or places you have visited.
