DID YOU KNOW?

Face makeup has been an important part of various cultures since at least 10,000 BCE, when the ancient Egyptians first used kohl to line their eyes and scented oils to perfume and protect their skin. In ancient Greece and Rome, pale skin came to represent purity, so women painted their faces with creams made from white lead, which we now know to be toxic!

In 16th century Europe, Queen Elizabeth I made pale skin even more desirable. Pale skin now signified nobility, since wealthy women did not have to work outside in the sun and thus kept their complexions pale. Upper class women used masks made from egg whites to create paler complexions and began dyeing their hair red or blonde to match the queen’s natural color. Women would also pluck or shave their eyebrows to create the illusion of a high forehead, which was considered a sign of aristocracy.

By the Victorian era, makeup had been declared improper and impure due to its association with “women of the night.” Still, women would use homemade cosmetics to create a very natural look. Rice powder was used on the face, beeswax added shine to the lips, and beet juice gave the cheeks a desirable healthy glow. Drops of lemon juice and even poisonous belladonna were used to brighten the eyes!

It wasn’t until the 1920s that makeup became more widely accepted and popular. The rise of Hollywood prompted the mass production of lipstick, eyeliner, mascara, and nail polish by companies that are still around today, like Maybelline, Max Factor, and L’Oreal.

I had no idea that making gloss was this easy, this is perfect since one is able to mix the kind of scents they would love to have, and the oils to mixed in I love it. One problem though where can I get the bee wax? Would really like to try this out.

I love this idea it's so simple but effective! It would make a great sentimental present for someone as well, ahem mothers is fast approaching for March and there are so many different flavoured oils out there you could make one with a flavour you know she loves. This really is a great little find.

What a truly great idea! It's easy, cute and inexpensive. The directions are just add, microwav and pour. How easy can you get? I think the best part of making these is the fact that you know exactly what ingredients you are putting on your lips because you do swallow some after licking your lips. Thank you so much for offering this great idea.

What a cute idea! You can customize the color of your homemade lip gloss. I love that you can use a lipstick shade that you already own and love.
