More Natural Decongestant Ideas

There are plenty of reasons why you might not want to take OTC meds for congestion. Those drugs can leave you feeling foggy or sleepy. Luckily, there are plenty of natural ways to unplug your nose, unplug your ears, and clear up sinus pressure. Consider the following remedies, as well.

  • Soup! Particularly chicken noodle (of course) and anything that is spicy. Spices help to clear out all that icky snot by stimulating your nasal cavity.

  • Lemons! Add a ton of lemon to your tea or cook up a lemony recipe. Lemons help fight inflammation which often causes sinus pressure.
  • Ginger is also a great way to fight inflammation.

  • Make Your Own Saline Spray. Mixing up your own saline spray or wash for your neti pot can save a ton of money. Skip taking too many decongestants and go the natural route.

  • Make a cayenne and apple cider vinegar-based decongestant. OTC meds can make your head foggy and ruin your day even more. Natural ways are a great way to treat symptoms without adding more.

  1. Feeling icky? Consider making one of these soup recipes from our friends at RecipeLion.com. Their list of the Best Soup for Cold and Flu Symptoms is sure to help you fight your symptoms.

I am into all natural remedies and essential oils and my oldest son snores bad so I will have to make some of this homemade nasel decongestant for him. I try and get him to use just the oils but he always says he forgets to use them. So easy to make and a great idea to make some extras for giving to others who snore or have allergies. Thank you for the post.

I am definitely making several of these for my kids. Everything is natural and non toxic! So many ideas in this website.

My sister has a horrible flu at the moment and her nasal decongestant isn't doing the trick so I hope this does. Essential oils have never let me down

This is such a wonderful idea! I love that this uses natural items instead of all of the chemicals in nasal sprays and such. I have really horrible sinus problems with the change of the seasons, and my husband snores so loud, my children can hear him at the other end of the house. This may be the answer to both problems! Does anyone have any idea how long the scents would last in these jars? I don't think I saw that in the recipe. Thanks for any thoughts!

I love this recipe! I think this would definitely work for stuffed up sinuses, as well as for snore relief. It seems to be very simple to make. Another great use for unflavored gelatin! The author explains what the different essential oils in the recipe do. It's so nice to be able to leave the jar open all night and get such wonderful benefits!

This could definitely come in handy during cold season!
