Unless you have flawless skin, chances are you need a good lotion to keep your skin hydrated. Follow this How to Make Homemade Lotion tutorial for a natural skin care recipe that won’t empty your wallet. To ensure that you’re covering your skin with healthy ingredients rather than harsh chemicals, learn how to make natural lotion. The best part about making your own lotion is that you can customize the recipe to suit your skin’s needs. For example, your skin may love coconut oil, but you may not want to spend a lot of money on a coconut moisturizer. Now, you can create a DIY lotion for a more affordable price and with the ingredients that you want to put on your skin.

While each moisturizer includes different ingredients, almost all effective lotions include a base oil, water, an emulsifier, a thickener, and a preservative. The best ratio for these ingredients in a DIY lotion is 70% water, 15% base oil, 7% emulsifier, 1% preservative, 3% Stearic acid, and the rest of the percentage is optional essential oils or butters. This homemade lotion recipe will bring out your inner scientist! To make sure your DIY skin care product lasts as long as possible, keep it away from any hot, damp places.

Materials List

  • Distilled water
  • Emulsifying wax (keeps the oil and water from separating)
  • Water soluble preservative, like Optiphen plus
  • Base Oil (such as coconut oil, sweet almond oil, grapeseed oil, etc.)
  • Stearic acid (thickener that keeps the emulsifier stable)
  • 2 stainless steel bowls
  • 2 pots
  • Juice Blender
  • Sterilized containers
  • food thermometer
  • Optional: other essential oils (such as tea tree or lavender) or butters (such as shea or cocoa)

How to Make Lotion

  1. Pour the base oil, the emulsion, the thickener, and any butters into a stainless steel bowl over a pot of boiling water. Heat and stir your mixture at about 160°F until the mixture almost completely melts.

  2. In a separate bowl and pot, heat the distilled water at about 160°F for roughly 20 minutes. Note: make sure you heat the oil and water bowls separately. This is very important!

  3. Mix the oil concoction and the distilled water in a bowl until the mixture turns creamy. Then, pour the mixture into a juice blender and blend for 3-5 minutes. It should become thicker and more creamy. Wait for it to cool until it reaches about 115°F.

  4. For the last step, add the preservatives and any essential oils and stir until the air bubbles disappear.

  5. Pour the mixture into sterilized containers or bottles, and let completely cool before capping them and putting them in the refrigerator.

The best "lotion" for you would be pure coconut oil. I guess this is a good alternative.

I never really thought about making lotion for my personal use. I just use plain coconut oil. Right out of a shower, I slather up and then towel off. I like the idea of a lotion so that I can have it on hand when not in the home. Looking on line for the products now.

I love trying to make my own bath products, so this is something I definitely want to try. I never realized making body lotion is so simple. Can't wait to try it!
