What is Shiplap?

Shiplap is a type of wooden interior wall paneling. This type of wooden paneling is identified by the distinctive channels in between the boards. Long horizontal (or vertical) panels formed by overlapping rabbets (grooved boards) are shiplap's most identifiable features. It is commonly used in the construction of barns, sheds, and seasonal homes. Because of how inexpensive it is and its functionality, weathertight shiplap has long been popular in areas with harsh climates, for woodland cabins and for coastal cottages.

Shiplap can also used on walls to add texture. It is considered a less formal way of adding interest to a wall and a way to increase the dimension of a space. While it was once considered rustic or period-piece material, shiplap is becoming a popular trendy element in home decor. Some consider finding shiplap underneath your wallpaper or drywall essentially the vertical equivalent of finding hardwood underneath your carpeting. The good news for DIY fans is that DIY shiplap walls are easier to implement than adding in your own hardwood floors! Plus, since it is a natural material, adding shiplap walls to any room in your home will add an element of history and character to any room in your home.

My husband is wanting to do shiplap on one side of living room wall but I was not to keen on it until I saw this tutorial. I thought it was quite expensive but this tutorial tell you how youcan buy thin plywood and cut in 6" strips instead of buying the expensive wood ones and I like them going across verses going down. I am going to put a color on mine instead of white. Some great pointers too. Anyone do the shiplap look yet?

I have come across a few shiplap posts on several websites. This has been the most inspiration one to date. I loved the idea the first time I saw it and have been budgeting for one shiplap wall in my home. Almost have it together.

This shiplap wall design was really created on a tight budget and still looks amazing. I love that Julia was able to show us how we can have the same look on a budget. Thanks for the idea.

I like it better without the white paint. So many ideas for my home!

Thanks to Chip and Joanna Gaines, shiplap is all the rage. Personally, I had never heard of shiplap before I started watching their show! I like how the technique brings the outside in and creates a nice accent wall.

My Miami friend has wanted this look in her apartment since she moved there in November. I can't wait to let her know about this idea. Thanks for sharing it with us. We have a holiday cottage in Yorkshire, UK, near the beach and it would look cool there too. What colour would look good in that setting and could it be multi-coloured with horizontal stripes?

I don't think I would be brave enough to try this, but I love how it looks!

This is such an interesting wall decor idea. I think it would be really cute in a bedroom or in an at-home library!
