Bed Riser Safety

It's smart to be thinking about safety with a project like this. No one wants to wake up to their bed sliding off of its risers!

If you're asking yourself, "are bed risers safe?" take a look at this list of safety precautions (which this project uses) and DIY with confidence.

  1. Use a strong material to construct your bed risers. Solid wood is one of the best choices, as it is very stable. Metal and plastic can also be used, but you'll want to make sure that they are very sturdy. Flimsy plastic or metal bed risers can increase the risk of collapse. The DIY bed risers in this project might look like they are made of metal, but they are actually solid wood!

  2. Don't raise your bed too high. The higher you raise your bed, the harder it is to ensure stability. These DIY bed risers provide a convenient 6" of  height to your bed. Once you approach 8", or higher, your bed risers will become less safe.

  3. Secure the legs of your bed to the bed risers. The more securely the bed risers are connected to the legs of your bed frame, the more stable everything will be. Make sure that the legs of your bed fit snugly into the top of the bed risers.

  4. Evaluate the security of your bed frame. If your bed frame is light and a little flimsy to begin with, then adding bed risers may further decrease its stability. Use your best judgment here! And if you install the bed risers and then feel like the bed is wobbly or unstable, remove them.

  5. Considering using risers for other furniture in your house? Check out these tips for adding height to your couch!
